Oh my goodness everyone! Look at this place! This may be the most beautiful place I have ever seen and will be my last stop on my vacation across Bolivia. This place is named Salar de Uyuni and is the largest salt flat in the world. Salt flats only occur in locations where the water cannot be drained into the ground and is instead evaporated leaving behind a thin layer of salt and other natural minerals giving off a white glare. The surface of Salar de Uyuni is made up of a few meters of salt and a top layer of brine which is high lithium and holds 50 to 70% of the worlds lithium reserves. The reflective nature of this flat only occurs after a rainfall as the rainwater spreads across the surface not being able to be drained into the ground and thus reflecting light.
You may be like me in thinking that this place could not get any better. But I'm here to tell you it sure does get better. On top of being absolutely gorgeous this amazing location is also home to a large number of flamingos! I love flamingos and have never been able to see them in their real habitat.
The country of Bolivia has decided to take the matters of mining the ore in the flat by themselves to get rid of any international expliotation that could potentially happen. In this fashion, Bolivia is able to directly monitor the drilling through the flat and is able to make sure that only modest amounts of minerals are taken out in order to preserve this wonderful natural location.
